SRP 2008 Materials on Your Doorstep?

Catch the Reading Bug @ Your Library materials should be arriving any day now.  Some folks have already gotten their packages, and the finger puppets have gotten rave reviews.

If your library does not receive its shipment ordered by us by March 1  and you filled out  a participation form back in October, please  let Priscilla McAdara know at 1-800-776-6566.

For those of you who sent in participation forms late, you will not be receiving your materials until May, but they should be there in time for summer.

If you didn’t send a participation form at all and want to participate in the statewide summer reading program for 2008, please visit our website at: http://library.state.ak.us/srp/home.html   and print out the partcipation form. Fax it quick as you can and before March 1 to us at 907-269-6580.

If you have received your package and think you’ll need more materials, go directly to the Highsmith special CSLP order form online at: https://www.highsmith.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/StoreCatalogDisplay?catalogId=11000&storeId=10001&langId=-1

It’s nice to think about SRP after this long cold spell, isn’t it?

Team Work Northern Style

NEW ALASKANA TITLE The Playful Pup Who Became a Sled Dog Hero

Fans of Pam Flowers (ALONE ACROSS THE ARCTIC, BIG-ENOUGH ANNA) and Jon Van Zyle (oh, we all know his work) will be glad to know that they have collaborated to produce a new picturebook, DOUGGIE: THE PLAYFUL PUP WHO BECAME A SLED DO HERO.  The true story of another of Pam’s dog team members and lead dog on her 325-mile expedition to the magnetic North Pole, this picture book is a story of determination with a touch of high Arctic adventure.  Let’s just say that a polar bear is involved.  (Alaska Northwest, 2008 ISBN 978-0-88240-654-1 )

Anime Web Site for Librarians

Did Wendy Sparkman mention this site in her presentation?

http://www.animeforlibraries.com/

I couldn’t remember, but thought I would pass it along in case any of you are or wanted to follow the idea of using anime in your collection and programming.

Looking for a Visit from an Alaskan Author?

 cover pic

This message was provided by Joyce McCombs of the Delta Community Library:

Acclaimed Delta Junction author and photographer, Cindy Lou Aillaud, has asked me to let you know that she is now retired from teaching and is ready to begin her long anticipated book tour – and of course she’s starting right here in Alaska!

You already know that “Recess at 20 Below” became a best seller as soon as it was published. “Recess” has sold out time and again and is currently in it’s 5th printing. If you have a signed first edition – you’re one of the lucky ones!

Cindy is starting her book tour in the Anchorage area in October and dates are filling up fast. She is glad she can finally say “Yes” to road trips during the school year and is eager to meet you.

To schedule an assembly or visit to your library anywhere in the state, and to learn more about her educational and fun filled presentation, check out the brand new “Recess” website:

http://www.recessat20below.com/

Winter is on it’s way and now the perfect time to plan a program that will encourage your students, families and patrons to do as Cindy does and…

“Bundle up and play outside!”

In a hurry?

Email Cindy now at: smiles99737@yahoo.com and she’ll get back to you asap.

Greetings, Youth Services Folks!

We hope you had a productive time in Anchorage at the Youth Services Workshop! We are setting up this blog to see if this is a good way to communicate about some of the topics we couldn’t cover in our brief time together.

Perhaps we can keep the idea exchange going this way as well.

We are experimenting with the capabilities of this blog, hosted by edublogs.org. We will be moderating and posting pages.  Right now you will be able to comment but not post pages.  We will see if we can broaden the posting of pages as we learn more about edublogs capabilities.

In the meantime, please send a comment to show that you have visited the site and what problems, if any, you may have had.

Sue and Sandra

Broadening Our Audience

We left the Alaska State Library with questions about how we could reach children who are not already library regulars.  Some of the teen programs that Tiffany and others described were a start.  Have you had any other thoughts since you left Anchorage?
